Blog | A change of attitude, expressed by gratitude

21 October 2020

Now, more than ever, the essential role that the professional cleaning industry is playing in protecting the health and wellbeing of our society is clearly evident. In hospitals, care homes, schools, offices, supermarkets, transport and public places, cleaning operatives are helping keep us safe and reducing the risk of infection, during the COVID-19 crisis.

Thank Your Cleaner Day - an annual celebration, which takes place on 21 October was established by Kärcher to give cleaners the recognition they deserve and shine a spotlight on the people who keep our workplaces and public buildings safe and clean.

As an employer that has always placed the wellbeing and happiness of our colleagues at the heart of our business, this is a cause that Facilicom is proud to support and champion. For a long time the cleaning profession has been undervalued by many, despite the extensive training required to meet standards and health and safety requirements. It’s a shame that it has taken a global pandemic to change hearts, and minds, but it finally feels like attitudes towards contract cleaning are improving.

We’ve always worked hard to change perceptions and get people to recognise the important work that professional operatives do. Despite immense current challenges, I have been overwhelmed by the unwavering dedication of our cleaning and security teams here at Facilicom and Trigion. I am so proud of the way that our people have come together and pulled out all the stops for our clients.

From undertaking additional training to delivering tasks outside of their normal requirements, our teams have gone above and beyond to ensure clients and their premises are clean, hygienic and safe.

This hasn’t gone unnoticed. I have received positive feedback from many clients, thanking our teams for their sheer perseverance. Some have commented on the diligence of our service, praising teams for the challenges they have overcome, and others have applauded the professionalism of our cleaners, who are still turning up to work with a smile on their face.

On this special day, that is dedicated to show cleaners that they are valued, I wanted to share some of the ways we show our colleagues our appreciation at Facilicom. Our company ethos is ‘happy people make happy people.’ When it comes to our personal or professional happiness, there are simple, but important points that hold true — one of which is the fundamental need to feel appreciated and valued.

To ensure that our colleagues are positive, healthy and appreciated, we have many processes in place to support them. These include our internal ‘Facilicom Awards,’ recognising and thanking colleagues who have gone above and beyond our exceptionally high standards. During the pandemic we have also showcased on our social media, individual and team examples of our colleagues’ work to support others, with the important message that #WeSupportTheUK.

Our Employee Assistance Programme provides 24/7 quick access to counselling, where staff can discuss any physical, mental, social or financial issues. We provide a training and development programme that not only supports our cleaning teams in their professional role, but also equips them with skills that can be transferred to their personal lives. And of course, we are firm supporters of the Living Wage movement ensuring our colleagues receive a fair pay that reflects the real cost of living.

There are many ways to show your gratitude for what hardworking cleaning operatives are doing, but one of the most straightforward is to express it in words – never underestimate the power of saying thank you!
